BIOGRAPHY

The billowing clouds in the sky, ready to burst with rain, the oceans rythmic waves. These are things Matthew Sumi's vision trys to capture in ways you otherwise might not have noticed. "I like to take the ordinary things we take for granted and make them beautiful again."

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Matthew was always drawing on the kitchen floor or walls and creating art however he could. It wasn't until his first years of college that he visited a gallery of photographs by local documentary photographers where he realized the power and beauty of the photography medium. Soon after, Matthew decided to study photography from the ground up. He started shooting, developing, making his own prints, learning the basics, and trying to develop his artistic vision.

Shooting on everything from 4x5 sheet film to 35 digital he loves to experiment and try new things. "I love fine art, because it tells so much about the artist as well as the subject." Matthew Sumi currently resides in Southern California with his wife, loves the outdoors, coffee, riding his bike, reading, and hopes to one day have a boston terrier.
